Martina Helena Kaufmann lives and works in Zurich.

Artist-Statement

Having grown up literally in the "in-between" of wider Zurich, I am attracted to both worlds that is of the "big-city" and that of the rural communities. In places where traditions and rituals are renegotiated or social norms meet new influences, questions arise for me which I pursue in my work.
From an exploratory approach in the course of observations and explorations of a space or in collaboration with a wide variety of people, an inner picture slowly forms. Out of this arise the first sketches of a concept or texts. These texts form the core of a work, they become the accompanying text or the inspiration that leads to the creation of a piece of work. The sound of a language and finding the appropriate "embodiment" for the text are the decisive elements.
My works usually moves in the area of tension between film, theater and visual arts. In doing so, I look for the moments of the "in-between", moments that arise from the threshold of one space to another. It is important to me that a work is in dialogue with it's environment, which is why I am particularly fascinated by creations of site specific works.
